More About The Moth

For more than 25 years, generous friends like you have helped people from all walks of life share their personal stories with The Moth. Thousands of stories—told at hundreds of events and workshops each year—have moved listeners and inspired future storytellers.

The Moth produces approximately 600 live shows each year and has an ongoing presence in 27 cities worldwide.
Ticket sales and other earned revenue streams cover 70% of The Moth's operating costs. Donations help fill the 30% gap, sustaining our founding promise to promote the art and craft of storytelling through our storytelling workshop programs for high school students, teachers, adults and advocates. We’re grateful for your support—as Moth-enthusiasts, radio and podcast listeners, storytellers, and event attendees!

The Community Engagement Program produced 43 events nationwide in 2023—including storytelling workshops, showcases, StorySLAMS, and instructor training sessions—serving 581 participants and more than 2,000 audience members. These events encompassed a breadth of focus areas and communities to include: Black Voices, Economic Mobility, Immigrant Voices, Health & Wholeness, Intergenerational Voices, Indigenous Voices, Justice, LGBTQIA+ Voices, Muslim Voices, and Veterans Voices.

The Education Program served 1,000+ students nationwide through 40 events in 2023—including residencies, college essay workshops, and assemblies—and introduced our first ever Summer StoryLab intensive workshop, our first 8-week in person workshop in Los Angeles, and our first All-Michigan virtual StoryLAB cohort. The Education Program also served the K-12 educator community through our first in-person professional development workshop in Detroit and the bi-annual Moth Teacher Institute: engaging 100 teachers who serve more than 3,000 students a year. In addition, our Moth Teacher’s Lounge supported 3,343 educators worldwide.

The Global Community Program helped over 220 advocates craft stories in 2023—in workshops in Nairobi and Dubai, focused on Food Security, HPV, Polio eradication and other global health issues. The Global team also produced a sold-out Moth Mainstage event in Nairobi, Kenya, and tailored storytelling events during the UN General Assembly and at the World Food Forum in Rome. These efforts continue the mission of The Global Community Program: to challenge dominant narratives, deepen connection, and create a more productive dialogue around the world.
